Outstanding Example – Officer Involved Shooting

This incident was handled exceptionally well by Officer Beau Lamens and his experience teaches us some key points that should become habitual for every armed public or private protector. First off, this was a textbook response to an armed aggressor. Second, this officer was serving in a community that had not experienced an officer involved shooting for fifteen years. When we serve in places where life-threatening encounters are rare, some people become complacent and view vigilance, training and preparedness as overkill. This officer did not.

As he states in the video, he practiced “what if” scenarios on every call and because he was extra vigilant, he made tactically sound decisions rather than just panic. As he says, the aggressor had the drop on him, but it was his quick thinking and tactical soundness that allowed him to defeat the threat before his own life was taken.

He was also prepared for what would come in the wake of a deadly shooting and since he was prepared, he made sound decisions and is at peace with his actions. The experience of shooting someone and taking a life, even when justified, is traumatic. Preparing yourself for that process can reduce the impact psychologically afterwards.

This is a reminder that we must continually prepare mentally, be alert and focussed during every working moment, and never let complacency creep into your mindset, regardless what others may think.

Well done Officer Beau Lamens.
